Torchwood Vid Recs

Whew, it's been a busy few days, but I've finally gotten a chance to write up my Torchwood vid recs list. First, a note: I do not watch videos on Youtube or Imeem. I love being able to watch vids that high in quality, and that I don't have to go searching for. Thus, the recs list below applies only to vids that have a download link (though most have Youtube or Imeem links as well).

Vid: butterfly
Music: Savage Garden
This is actually a Torchwood/Doctor Who vid, but as someone who has only ever watched Torchwood I can still say that I found this vid pretty amazing. On a technical level, it's beautiful, with lots of meaningful parallelisms. Plus, it's pretty fast-paced (especially near the beginning) which is something I really love in a vid. In terms of storytelling, as I said, I don't watch Doctor Who, so I'm probably not getting the entire story here. However, I can safely say the Torchwood bits are really nicely put together; a part that comes to mind is the comparison of John to junk food, or of the Owen/Gwen relationship to beauty magazines. And then there's the thought-provoking line: "I believe that trust is more important than monogamy" in reference to Jack and Ianto.

Vid: Cherry (cherryice)
Music: Hole
Since I started working on my own vid, one of the things I've become so much more aware about is the use of transitions. I've spent huge amounts of time wondering things like - 'is this fade to black and back distracting? Would it be better as a cross-fade? Maybe I should just stick with normal, no-nonsense cuts'. Watching this video - she gets it perfect. This is one of the most incredibly crafted vids I've ever seen. The recurring images, use of movement to show parallels between clips, the almost ghost-like way the images fade in and out. Just - wow. Watch. Now.

And she calls herself a 'newbie'(!?)

End of the World News

Vid: Andraste (andrastewhite)
Music: Tom McRae
The storytelling in this is really nice. On a basic level - Torchwood fucks people up. Which leads to some pretty fucked up ways of coping, and that's what this vid conveys so well. As well, the clips and cutting fit really well with the music (most notable, for me, is the moment Gwen enters her apartment to find it has been ransacked).

Papa Don't Preach
Vid: greensilver and eunice (fan_eunice)
Music: Madonna
If you haven't watched this yet, where have you been for the past few weeks? This vid is sheer cracky goodness, in which the Master gets Jack pregnant, but don't worry, Ianto will take care of him. Madonna just seems so... appropriate for Jack (or John's occasional overacting, anyways). The vid isn't particularly fast-paced, but the storyline is easy to follow, and I recommend it if only for its sheer hilarity and the opportunity to watch a wide variety of John's facial gymnastics. (I love John, I really do, I just can't take him seriously sometimes.)

Set the Fire to the Third Bar
Vid: SE (sol_se)
Music: Snow Patrol
I love the storytelling in this vid. Simply put, this is Ianto and Jack's relationship from Ianto's point of view. And the pressure just builds and builds and builds. And then the end, with the contrast between the magical blue box travelling through space and Ianto, picking up the garbage! And Jack, walking away! And Ianto, adjusting his tie, right back to where he started. (Odd note: there's one clip, at "their words mostly noises" that I love because it's never been used before in any vids that I've seen, and it just fits so well.) Flawlessly cut, perfectly timed, and the use of focus and speed changes really add something unique to this vid. (Actually I recommend checking sol_se's LJ out - she has a ton of really well-made vids; this is just the one that I have saved to my computer and have obsessively watched over and over again.)

Steady As She Goes
Vid: kuwdora
Music: The Raconteurs
Two things you need to know about this vid: it is short (2:15 min), and it is about Tosh. It's hard for me to describe why I like this vid. Part of it is the song choice, which works really well for Tosh's character and that it's really catchy doesn't hurt. Part of it is the pacing, which always fits perfectly with the tone of the song. There's a sense of movement and energy in this vid that isn't usually associated with Tosh. One caveat to this rec is that the vid ends rather abruptly, but it's not enough nearly to keep me from watching it over and over again.

Hope these recs have helped you all find some great new Torchwood vids to watch!

I'm trying not to feel like I've failed in that none of my videos made this list.

Like I mentioned at the top of the post, I pretty much only watch vids that I can download to my computer. I tend pass over those that can only be found on sites like Youtube and Imeem. This is not a reflection of any vidders' abilities; it's just my own personal preference. So, it's not that your vids aren't good, it's just that they aren't in the format that I prefer on a personal level, and thus that this recslist concentrates on.

I've recently finished my very first vid and i'm honestly VERY proud of it! I would love for you to give me your honest opinion since you've seen so many fanvids.

You can watch it on youtube here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=EErjw3UWPow

And you can download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?etiz3yw1zdk

It starts off a little slow paced but it picks up, promise ;)

First thing you need to know is that I'm a newbie fanvidder myself, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. That said, I'll be glad to take a look. :)

As you said, it starts off a bit slow (especially with the morgue drawer shot), but I really like how the hissing sound corresponds to the shot of the Sleeper (forgot her name) opening her eyes. It really gives her that creepy, almost robotic edge. I really like the timing in the little segment with John and Jack fighting, and the cut to the shots of Cardiff. And the shot of Rhys' mom exploding! The chorus is nicely quick, but other places are just a bit slower-paced than I like, but that's completely a personal preference. I have to say that your timing for a lot of shots (Jack getting shot, Jack getting stabbed, the sex alien's victim exploding) is just spot on, and timing is something that I, personally, have a huge issue with, so I'm impressed. If there's anything to work on, it's that the cuts feel so much tighter and meaningful near the end of the vid, which is understandable since you were learning as you were making it (it's happening to me, too, actually!).

Also, on another note: do mediafire files ever expire? I'm looking for a good place to host my vid once I'm finished it.

About the slow paced parts, I personally prefer them to be fast paced like the shots are during the chorus, but I also wanted the vid to work with the song and the song itself had slow and fast paced parts in it.
As for the shot on the sleepers eyes, I'm SO glad that you found it creepy because that's what I was aiming for. I also tried to make the shot zoom in on her eyes but I couldn't figure out to do that lol.
And for the timing, that's what took the most time to work on. I've worked on this vid for over a month and I still find flaws when I watch it, but I'm either tired of working on it or I don't know how to fix it, so I just left it as it is :p
And yeah, I do find the second half of the vid better than the first half, but like I said, I'm just too tired of working on it to go back and fix anything :p

As for mediafire, i'm not 100% sure, but I think the files do expire. I think Rapidshare files don't, but you'll have to check because I'm not sure about that either.

Anyway, thank you soooo much for your feedback. It certainly was helpful and I'll keep everything in mind if I ever plan on making another vid. It's always great to get constructive criticism.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I'm only at the 1:00 min mark in mine, but I'm already pretty sick of the song after hearing it approximately 10000 times. :P But I am determined to bear it out!

I'm glad the constructive criticism has helped. I just wish there was a way to get the criticism before posting the vid, you know? Like a vid beta-ing community, or something.

Thank you so much for rec-ing these. I don't particularly like watching vids on YouTube either, preferring the higher quality stuff, but I haven't had much luck with finding them. So thanks.

Ooooh lovely recs! I'd only seen two of these. *runs off to d/l & watch*

I'll add a couple of my own that I think you'll like:

Break My Fall by mirien3. It's a Jack/Ianto vid, but it doesn't sentimentalise the 'ship in any way, and manages to show just how complex the characters are whilst still bringing out the tenderness that we sometimes get. Oh and the song is *perfect*!

Behind Blue Eyes by obfreak. A S1 Jack vid that is quite simply stunning. Thinking about it, it works beautifully as the counterpart to 'Set Fire to the Third Bar' - both men are broken, each in their way. Just watch it!

Awesome; I hadn't seen either of these before! I just watched them, and I have to say that of the two, Break My Fall is my favourite; it has some really interesting use of effects and I'm a sucker for action sequences in vids. And, even disregarding the technical aspects, Behind Blue Eyes is great for the chance to ogle tons of pretty pretty Jack. :)
